Become A Mentor
Inspire. Empower. Transform a Life.
At Shako Mako Iraqi American Association, mentorship is more than guidance; it is leadership, storytelling, cultural pride, and community-building woven together. Our Become a Mentor Program connects experienced, compassionate individuals with youth, newcomers, professionals, and community members who are seeking support, direction, and someone who understands their journey. By becoming a mentor, you help strengthen the bridge between generations, cultures, and experiences. You offer more than advice, you offer hope, belonging, and a path forward. Mentors often tell that they gain as much as they give; personal fulfillment, a sense of purpose, and pride in making a real difference.
This program was inspired by the real needs of Iraqi families in the U.S., families balancing two cultures, young people searching for belonging, newcomers trying to rebuild their lives, and professionals looking for guidance. We often hear:
- “I wish my child had someone who understands our culture.”
- “I want to make a difference but don’t know where to start.”
- “I needed someone like me growing up.”
- “I want to help the next generation do better.”
These voices inspired us to create a space where experience becomes mentorship, culture becomes strength, and community becomes family.
The Mentor Program was created to support the personal, academic, and professional growth of Iraqi Americans and friends of our community through one-on-one or one-to-many connection. Its purpose is to:
- Provide guidance for youth and adults navigating school, college, careers, or life transitions
- Offer culturally informed mentorship from individuals who share similar backgrounds, values, or experiences
- Strengthen identity and confidence by celebrating Iraqi heritage and promoting pride in who we are
- Create meaningful relationships that enrich both mentors and mentees
- Promote leadership, community engagement, and positive role modeling
This program is a key part of our mission to build a thriving, empowered community where everyone feels supported and seen.
