Our Story
Shako Mako – Iraqi American Association was born from a deeply personal place, a love for service, a passion for community, and a profound respect for heritage.
For years, I’ve been serving the Iraqi American community in volunteer roles; helping where I could, connecting people, and offering support. This work wasn’t part of a job or obligation; it came from the heart. It came from my love for Iraq: its civilization, its culture, its poetry and warmth, and the pride passed down to me by my late father. He taught me that serving others is one of the noblest acts, and that true strength lies in generosity and kindness.
As a first-generation immigrant, I’ve always felt a responsibility that goes beyond community service. We are cultural ambassadors, carrying the legacy of Mesopotamia while building bridges in our new home. We want our children and neighbors to know Iraq not just through headlines of war and hardship, but through its rich history, music, cuisine, language, hospitality, and the resilience of its people.
This organization is an answer to that calling. It’s a place where Iraqi Americans can find belonging and support. Where we preserve our heritage and pass it forward. Where we change narratives and celebrate who we are: capable, compassionate, open to others, and essential contributors to any community we’re part of.
For me, this is more than a nonprofit, it’s a tribute to my roots, to the lessons of my father, and to the community I love so deeply. I created Shako Mako to be a home for all of us, a space where we can uplift one another, honor where we come from, and build something beautiful for the generations that follow.
