Civic Engagement & Advocacy

Many Iraqi and Arab immigrants and refugees in the Austin area experience a sense of disconnection from civic life in the United States. Language barriers, lack of access to reliable information, unfamiliarity with the American political system, and feelings of marginalization have kept many community members on the sidelines when it comes to voting, policy participation, public advocacy, and local leadership. As a result, their voices are underrepresented in decisions that directly impact their lives; such as housing, education, immigration policy, and cultural funding. There is a need for trusted, culturally-informed organizations that can build bridges between the Iraqi-American community and civic structures in Austin and beyond.
We envision a vibrant, civically engaged Iraqi-American community in Austin that is informed, active, and represented in public discourse and decision-making. We want community members to vote, attend public forums, advocate for policies that reflect their needs and values. We aim to create a culture of empowerment where participation is not only possible, but expected and celebrated.
How We’ll Get There (Our Approach)
Community Education and Awareness: Our first step is to ensure that Iraqi and Arab community members in Austin have access to accurate, understandable, and culturally relevant information about civic life in the U.S. We will host workshops and community town halls to explain how the government works on the local, state, and federal levels. Through bilingual materials and interpretation services, we will eliminate language barriers that prevent participation. Trusted community leaders and elders will help spread awareness and build confidence in the civic process.
Leadership Development and Advocacy Training
To cultivate future civic leaders, we will launch a Civic Leadership Academy that equips both youth and adults with the skills and knowledge needed to advocate effectively. Participants will learn about grassroots organizing, public speaking, and how to influence policy. Mentorship opportunities will connect emerging leaders with experienced advocates and officials, while targeted support will encourage Iraqi-Americans to pursue roles on advisory boards, city commissions, and within nonprofit organizations.
Community Mobilization and Policy Engagement
We will activate the community around key issues that directly affect their daily lives; such as immigration policy, education access, and housing rights. An Advocacy Task Force within Shako Mako will coordinate these efforts, ensuring our community is present and represented at public hearings, city council meetings, and local rallies. We will also form coalitions with other underrepresented groups in Austin, uniting voices for greater impact.
Cultural Representation and Storytelling
To bridge gaps and foster understanding, we will uplift the voices of Iraqi-Americans through creative expression. Art, storytelling, cultural festivals, and media outreach will help humanize the experiences of our community. These narratives will not only increase visibility but also serve as a powerful tool for advocacy, shifting public perceptions and opening doors to policy change.
Access to Legal and Civic Resources
We recognize that meaningful civic engagement requires access to support. We will provide legal clinics and help navigate public services, especially around immigration, housing, and welfare access. By partnering with pro bono attorneys and local service providers, we will ensure that community members know their rights and have the resources to act on them.
