Supporting Newcomers

Many Iraqi newcomers arrive in the Austin area facing numerous challenges: language barriers, cultural adjustment, limited social networks, underemployment, trauma from displacement, and a lack of access to essential services. While Austin is a welcoming and diverse city, resources tailored specifically to Arabic-speaking and Iraqi communities are limited, making integration and self-sufficiency difficult. Without a support system, many newcomers feel isolated, disoriented, and disconnected from both their heritage and their new home.

We envision an empowered, well-integrated Iraqi community in Austin that is connected, resilient, and thriving; culturally, socially, and economically. Iraqi newcomers will not only feel at home in Austin but will contribute meaningfully to the city’s civic, educational, and cultural landscape. They will have access to culturally responsive support, opportunities for education and employment, immigration and legal assistance, and a vibrant Iraqi community where their identity is preserved and celebrated.

How We’ll Get There

To support Iraqi newcomers in their journey of integration and empowerment, Shako Mako will take a culturally responsive, community-driven approach grounded in practical assistance, education, advocacy, and connection.

Welcoming and Orientation Programs

We will begin by creating welcoming and orientation programs designed specifically for Arabic-speaking families. This includes developing newcomer welcome kits in Arabic and English, hosting workshops that introduce newcomers to life in Austin, covering transportation, schools, healthcare, employment systems, and community resources, and offering interpretation and translation assistance as needed.

Language and Skills Development

Language and skills development will be a cornerstone of our work. We will provide ESL classes tailored to the unique needs of Arabic speakers, as well as job readiness programs that include resume support, interview preparation, digital literacy, and vocational training. We’ll also match participants with bilingual mentors and professionals who can guide them on career and education pathways.

Community Connection and Belonging

To combat isolation and build a sense of belonging, we will create regular opportunities for community connection and cultural pride. These include social gatherings like tea nights, storytelling circles, traditional music and dance nights, and heritage festivals that celebrate Iraqi food, art, and traditions. Intergenerational programs will also help bridge cultural gaps between youth and elders.

Access to Services

A key element of our approach is ensuring access to vital services. We will partner with local health providers, schools, housing agencies, and legal organizations to help newcomers navigate complex systems. We will offer direct navigation assistance and connect them with trusted organizations that provide support for housing, healthcare, and education. Additionally, we will support the legal immigration process by assisting newcomers in completing green card applications and connecting them with accredited legal aid. We’ll also guide families through accessing public welfare programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, and housing assistance.

Mental Health and Wellness

Recognizing the trauma many newcomers have experienced, we will prioritize mental health and emotional wellness by offering culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care referrals in Arabic. Community healing circles and wellness sessions will also provide safe spaces for processing grief, building resilience, and strengthening relationships.

Leadership & Advocacy

We believe in the power of community leadership and advocacy. We will train community members to become confident advocates for themselves and their families and encourage civic engagement through participation in school boards, city forums, and community initiatives. Our goal is to support the emergence of Iraqi voices in leadership roles and to help shape the city’s future through inclusive participation.

Through these layered and intentional efforts, Shako Mako aims to transform the newcomer experience from one of struggle and disconnection to one of empowerment, dignity, and lasting belonging.
